The office of the Standards Committee for Iron and Steel (Normenausschuss Eisen und Stahl, FES) within DIN was established in 1947. It is organised, funded and staffed by VDEh but the committee performs its technical work according to DIN rules.

FES is responsible for representing German interests in the context of the worldwide and regional iron and steel standardisation activities in the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and the European Committee for Iron and Steel Standardization (ECISS), and for developing the relevant national standards (DIN). Its duties specifically include the preparation of delivery, quality, dimensional and terminological standards for all products and processes of the iron and steel industry, and of product-specific test standards not covered by other standardising committees by special agreement.
