The MPIE has been doing fundamental research on iron, steel and related materials since 1917. The Stahlinstitut VDEh and the Max-Planck-Gesellschaft zur Förderung der Wissenschaften e.V. (The Max-Planck-Society for the Advancement of Science) are equal shareholders in this scientific institute. The MPIE, with about 230 employees, is organised into five departments:

| Tasks |
| The Max-Planck Institute for Iron and Steel Research investigates the material processes involved in production, metal-forming and chemical treatment, their effect on the formation of material microstructure and surface structure, as well as the fundamental interrelationships between microstructures and mechanical and chemical properties. This work is intended to deepen our understanding of these phenomena with the aim of further developing the production, properties and usability of the materials. |
